Smart Cities and Communities – Overview

The smart city and communities revolution is underway. Greater advances in technology, such as the expansion of the Internet of Things, are enabling cities to make an important progress on open data, delivering innovation, and therefore enhancing lives of citizens. All of which result in smarter and more sustainable places. Technologies have the potential of boosting productivity, delivering better public services, making transport more efficient, reducing energy needs and protecting citizens. Digitalisation could allow literally billions of everyday objects to communicate with each other over the Internet. But what can governments do to help achieve the potential value of technologies in their cities?

Smart Cities UK – Overview

Smart City UK is seeing more and more examples of smart city transformation. Key ‘smart’ sectors utilised by such Cities include transport, energy, health care, water and waste. Against the current background of economic, social, security and technological changes caused by the globalization and the integration process, cities in the UK face the challenge of combining competitiveness and sustainable urban development simultaneously.

A smart city is a place where the traditional networks and services are made more efficient with the use of digital and telecommunication technologies, for the benefit of its inhabitants and businesses.

With this vision in mind, the European Union is investing in ICT research and innovation and developing policies to improve the quality of life of citizens an make cities more sustainable in view of Europe’s 20-20-20 targets.

The smart city concept goes beyond the use of ICT for better resource use and less emissions. It means smarter urban transport networks, upgraded water supply and waste disposal facilities, and more efficient ways to light and heat buildings.

And it also encompasses a more interactive and responsive city administration, safer and secure public spaces.

Creating Resilient Cities will lead the way on addressing the best practice examples on smart transformation from across Cities within the United Kingdom whilst disseminating guidance and information transformation within waste, energy, transport and other key smart sectors.

The 5th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2015)

The rapid advancement and ubiquitous penetration of mobile network, web based information creation and sharing, and software defined networking technology have been enabling sensing, predicting and controlling of physical world with information technology. Every business process can be empowered, and therefore, various industries redesign their business models and processes along Internet of Things (IoT) paradigm. To maximize the social and economic benefit of the technology, issues of interoperability, mashing up data, developing open platforms and standardization across technology layers have to be addressed.

Pervasive connectivity, smart devices and demand for data testify to an IoT that will continue to grow by leaps and bounds. Computing power is dropping in price while new sensors are being developed and incorporated into everyday objects, and as people buy into IoT technology, economies of scale lend themselves to the creation of ever more data-centric businesses. Instrumenting and connecting devices has massive potential to deliver value, but there is need for a coordinated effort when rolling out the next generation of self-reporting paradigms. With the strong supports from industry and academia the international conference on Internet of Things has become the premier gathering place for visionary, academic researchers and practitioners around IoT. The 5th International Conference on the Internet of Things (IoT 2015), building on the success of its predecessors since 2008, is the premier forum for such efforts, to share, discuss and witness cutting edge research in all areas of development for the Internet of Things.

The Internet of Things Conference is seeking original, high impact research papers on all topics related to the development of the Internet of Things. Papers will be reviewed and selected based on technical novelty, integrity of the analysis and social impacts and practical relevance.

The schedule for IoT 2015 will be announced on August.
